OURS Cafe, Kalk Bay

OURS, 48 Main Road, Kalk Bay

Yesterday I met my friend Clare for lunch at OURS Cafe in Kalk Bay – simple fare, good company and the best coffee in Cape Town.

OURS is run by a group of surfer dudes/ coffee aficionados. They’re not trying to be the next Big Food Fad in Cape Town, they’re just keeping it real. The cafe has evolved from the original hole in the wall serving coffee and pastries to incorporate a beautiful courtyard area overlooking the ocean with lunch and dinner thrown in for good measure.

Lunch Salad

Clare and I sat outside in dappled sunlight with a cool sea breeze wafting in from the bay and caught up over a light meal. She had the lunch salad – at first they forgot the boiled eggs and dressing but sorted it out quickly. Apparently Craig, the resident chef, was off for the afternoon.

Pasta Rustica

I had the Pasta Rustica: bacon, mushrooms and peas in a cream sauce – sans peas (unintentionally). It was rustic, the kind of cooking mates do for each other – not too fancy, not too frilly and heavy on flavouring. Manly food.

The menu is simple, the food basic and the servings large. We had the salad, the pasta (both half portions), two coffees and a gorgeous afternoon in the courtyard and the bill came to R104 (without tip). Bargain.

The perfect flat white

And then there’s the coffee… In my opinion, Dave and his barista boys make the finest flat white in all of the land. I was fresh off the boat when I first stumbled upon their flat white at the City Bowl Market two years ago. Since then they’ve become my benchmark for good coffee in this town. At OURS Cafe they’ve found a home, a permanent base from which to brew their magic beans.

The theme throughout the cafe is authentic beach shack, from the menu and staff to the food and decor. I loved the calendar stuck to the tiles and the surf boards (and surfers) propped against the walls. It’s very much a local boy hangout with absolutely no pretenses.

Thursday to Sunday, 06h30 – 21h30

OURS Cafe reminds me a lot of the Portuguese seaside cafes – during the day you jostle the tourists for your morning coffee, or lunch time prego; but when the sun sets, the streets are yours – as is Ours where you take in your evening espresso and catch up with mates before a leisurely stroll home in the salty night air. Perfect.

I enjoyed 3 really excellent coffees at Ours (as discovered in The CoffeeMag) in the past week on a trip from Jhb. They were prepared by barista Jan. The food was pretty good and I got fabulous service. The Origin Autumn Blend is amongst the best I have had. Great spot!

My cousin and I had a flat white at ours cafe yesterday and I must say it is in the top 5 of my best coffee spots. The service was excellent and I will definitely visit again!

  3. Love Ours, the coffee and unpretentious vibe. Myself and my partner Chris have learnt alot through their cupping sessions, loved the warthog and pasta rustica and just yesterday went back for their flat white. Great post!

We were wondering around Kalk Bay looking for a place for a light meal. We stumbled on Ours and thought it worth a try. Whata mistaka to maka! We ordered a glass of water and a black coffee while we perused the interesting menu. After 10 minutes a cappuccino arrived, no water. 10 minutes later the water arrived. We ordered their reef burger which looked like it would be delcicious. Well, after about an hour of waiting, a decicious fruit juice and a second cappuccino later, and after apologies and being assured every 10 minutes that the burgers were just 2 minutes away we waked out in disgust!

We’re fans of Ours’ breakfast – know the guys running it, surf with them, etc. But was well disappointed by their fish braai last night. Can forgive them for not being prepared for the mass of people that came, but the food was unforgivable. R75 for a tiny piece of braai fish which was ok, but nothing spectacular. The “red veg curry” was far from “ok” – overcooked, smooshy veggies with no flavour and no sauce to speak of. And for that we were charged R65 (despite complaining). If I wanted a night of being shafted, I would’ve done my taxes. Sorry to say guys, but the only thing you’re doing here is shafting yourself – we won’t be back.

      Hey Bee

You may say that the boys stick at the other food offerings on the menu, but why boycott them when you make a claim that you are “FANS” of their breakfast? . . .small businesses need all the support they can get, even if you put the past behind you and continue to have breakfast there!!! Local is Lekker . . . .!

      • That it is Rian, and don’t forget the coffee, the atmosphere and the company! I’ll be back just as soon as the roadworks are done. Plus Dave is the new National Barista champ, right? I knew him back when…
