Happy days

For the past few Sundays I’ve found myself at The Creamery soaking up the clean, crisp interior, the salted caramel sauce and the overwhelmingly cheerful sense of community.  I’ve queued with the kids, grans and couples for my favourite flavour and sat outside watching the side streets ooze families from their depths, sending them streaming into the cafe. Kate Scheirer’s dessert cafe is a hive of activity, drawing people in with its promise of  nostalgic bonhomie and delectable classics.

The Creamery serves, in its own words: “honest-to-goodness, made-from-scratch, not-your-average ice cream”. Ingredients are sourced as locally as possible and where not, they support local, artisanal businesses. They buy chocolate from CocoaFair and coffee from Rosetta Roastery, both of whom process imported beans with home-grown flair.

Having served her time with both The Slow Movement and the Sustainable Institute, Kate started The Creamery commercial kitchen in Mowbray in November 2011. After eleven months of scooping ice cream at local food markets and building up a solid client base with her quality product, she finally found her Newlands niche and on September 14th 2013, The Creamery Dessert Cafe opened its doors to the community and surrounds.

The waffles are light and crispy, the toppings rich and dreamy. Seasonal ice cream flavours vary from Jasmine Blossom to Cardamom & Roast Pear and you haven’t lived until you’ve tasted the Fennel Pollen & Peach. Only the season’s finest, plucked from nature’s bosom at its peak will do for our Kate.

The Creamery isn’t just about calories and crunch, they also serve a mean cup of Rosetta coffee and have an extensive selection of South African teas to choose from. And if light, fluffy waffles draped in delectable ice cream and slathered in chocolate sauce isn’t quite your idea of a champion breakfast, there’s also a choice of home-made sweet buns, eggs and toast soldiers and granola with yoghurt and fresh fruit.

But as good as the healthier options are, there’s no denying the appeal of a Creamery S’mor: a scoop of rich chocolate ice cream topped with toasted marshmallow and a home-made Graham Cracker, served with a shot of chocolate sauce.

A selection of trendy, fresh-faced kids behind the counter generously offer tasters of the eight or so ice creams on offer on the day. As most of their flavours are seasonal, the selection changes from week to week. Once you’ve settled on your flavour du jour, the next step is to decide if you’d like that scooped on a cone, in a cup, plonked on a crispy, hot waffle and smothered in sauce or whizzed up with fresh milk into the best milkshake you’re ever likely to have. Total taste bud turmoil!

Double thick and decadent

Open all day from Tuesday to Sunday and until late on weekends, The Creamery is the ideal hangout for milkshakes and munchies on a hot summer’s day or a decadent dessert after a good night out.  The flavours are fresh, the desserts, comforting and in a time of global upheaval Kate has tapped into our nostalgic yearnings and delivered with her community spirit and her mouth watering puds from just down the drag.

In Kate’s own words: “I always knew I wanted to start my own business, something that would still connect me directly to emerging food growers, and give me the freedom to run a for-profit business along non profit principles.” That’s Kate-speak for wanting to make a living while still being able to give something back.
